Bengaluru, Oct 2025 —
Hombale Films, the studio known for KGF and Kantara, has created history with its animated feature Mahaavatar Narsimha. Released on 25 July 2025, the mythological epic has become India’s highest-grossing animated film, setting new benchmarks for homegrown animation.
Record-Breaking Box Office Run
With an estimated budget of just ₹15 crore, Mahaavatar Narsimha closed its theatrical run with a staggering ₹320.79 crore worldwide gross, delivering profits of nearly 1550%. Industry trackers have called it “the most profitable animated film in Indian history.”
The movie struck a chord with families and children, with parents describing it as more than entertainment — “an experience that connected emotionally.”
OTT Success Story
After its theatrical success, Mahaavatar Narsimha debuted on Netflix, where it clocked 5.3 million views in just 10 days. The film also entered the platform’s Global Top 10 (Non-English) chart, proving its international appeal.
The Piracy Challenge
Amid its blockbuster run, the film faced piracy issues. Leaked copies surfaced online, raising concerns within the industry about the persistent challenge of safeguarding Indian content. Despite this, its popularity and earnings remained unaffected.
The Future: Mahavatar Cinematic Universe
Hombale Films has confirmed that Mahaavatar Narsimha is just the beginning of a larger vision. The sequel, titled Mahaavatar Parashuram, is slated for a 2027 release. According to co-founder Chaluve Gowda, the studio is building a “Mahavatar Cinematic Universe” to reimagine Indian mythology for global audiences.
Why It Matters
For decades, animated films in India struggled to match the scale and storytelling of international studios. Mahaavatar Narsimha signals a shift, proving that Indian mythological stories — told with high-quality animation and cinematic vision — can succeed both at home and abroad.
